Ex-director Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.) visits the Dutch Theater Festival
In the interview program The State of the World, a leading international artist reflects on the role of art in our changing world and the position of the Netherlands in it. This year our guest is the influential American performing artist Marc Bamuthi Joseph, until recently board member of the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Shortly after the Trump administration took over, Bamuthi Joseph was fired. Until then, he was Artistic Director of Social Impact at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., where, among other things, he developed innovative programs at the intersection of arts, social justice and community building. In the media, he spoke out about the impact of these institutional shifts on artists and collaborators. This critical position, and his keen vision of the role of art in a divided society, is the reason for his coming to Amsterdam.
During The State of the World he will speak about his personal experiences within the American arts field, about the challenges of making art in times of political tension and about the power of imagination as a source of recovery, resistance and connection.
Marc Bamuthi Joseph is interviewed by Rokhaya Seck (De Balie)
