A diverse panel explores the real challenges of creating activist theater
The Artist as Activist is a bold conversation about the power of theater as the instigator of political and social transformation. Led by writer and activist Sahar Shirzad, this session brings together a diverse panel of theater artists whose work intersects with pressing contemporary issues, such as climate justice, transgender rights and war.
Artists such as Jonny Tudor (Theater the Generator) and Vladlena Sandu (The Rainbow Cinema, Extremist Alice) reflect on the personal and political urgencies that drive them to engage in activism through performance.
The panelists delve into the ways in which individual artists take a stand. Then the focus shifts to the institutional landscape: how do theaters and festivals respond to activist work? Next, they unravel the real challenges of creating activist theater – funding, censorship, burnout – and how to maintain energy in the midst of resistance. They conclude with a collaborative brainstorming session on practical strategies for activist artists.
