Making Money in the Arts: New Pathways for Blended Funding

Hybrid financing as a future model for a resilient cultural sector

Can the boundaries between public funding and commercial income become more fluid? This session explores the future of arts financing through hybrid models. How can cultural organisations combine different sources of income to build more sustainable and resilient structures?

Using compelling case studies — from KOBRA’s mixed model to the collaboration between Oostpool and TEC Entertainment for Aletta the Musical — we will examine both the opportunities and challenges of hybrid financing. We’ll also discuss how new financial instruments, such as revolving funds (developed by the Dutch Association of Independent Theatre Producers, the Performing Arts Fund NL, the Cultural Participation Fund, and Cultuur&Ondernemen), could reshape the financial ecosystem of the performing arts.

Key questions include:

  • How can organisations balance artistic integrity with commercial viability?
  • What are the risks and rewards of hybrid structures?
  • How can innovative funds create new opportunities for makers and institutions?

This session includes short presentations and a moderated roundtable, and invites culture professionals to reflect critically on their own future funding strategies.

Moderator: Carolien Borgers
Panel members include: Majlis Korthals, producer & impresario at Kobra Theater productions; Fred Boot, secretary VVTP & chairman of the Theaterdagen Foundation

Co-organised by the Dutch Association of Independent Theatre Producers (VVTP), celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
